Scratches, Cracks and Chips: Can this Windshield be Saved?

Windshield damage generally falls into one of these three categories: scratches, chips and cracks.

Scratches are usually caused by windshield wiper blades that haven’t been replaced. When the rubber on the windshield wiper wears off, metal can make contact with the glass, causing a scratch that deepens over time. Scratches don’t affect the structural integrity of the windshield, but they can be unsightly and may reflect light from the sun or headlights from oncoming traffic — which can impair your vision. We recommend repairing your windshield.

Cracks are similar to scratches, but they are more severe. They can be either shallow or deep and have become long enough to spread through the glass and affect its structural integrity. They penetrate through at least the outer layer of glass in the windshield, and they can appear anywhere on your windshield. Cracks can be caused by flying debris or even extreme temperature changes!

Chips are tiny pieces of glass that flake off from your windshield after a rock or some other type of debris hits it. Chips come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny dots to large cracks surrounded by spider web-like lines.

Should you repair or replace your windshield? It depends on the damage. If your windshield is cracked or chipped, but not shattered and does not interfere with visibility, repairing it may be the best option. However, if a large portion of your windshield is damaged and there are cracks running across the entire surface of it, then you’ll want to replace it as soon as possible.
